ANB Australian natural bodybuilding champion Martin Sifredi ran for a council seat in Oakleigh Ward on an election held this weekend.

As part of his candidates statement Martin said “I have proven I can get results in bodybuilding. I now want to tackle our Council“.

He also said in his candidate statement “I’ll restore some economic discipline and freeze future rate increases. These are difficult economic times and the Council needs to cut its spending to stop rating families out of existence. I’ll ensure the Council upgrades our vital infrastructure and that it looks after our pathways, reserves, rubbish collection and library services.” Check out the official government website for his and all the candidates full statements.

There is a total of 3 seats available and Martin was up againest David Box, Felicity Zwalf, Melissa Christodoulakidis, Bill Pontkis, Denise McGill, Raff Ciccone, Stefanie Perri, Johnny Maddaluno, Matthew Billman, John Chen, Theo Zographos and Stephen Dimopoulos.

Green candidate Matthew Billman’s blog mentioned that Martin trains with Mayor Paul Klisaris and links both an article and a photo as though it is something negative. We’re obviously bodybuilding aficionados and not political experts let alone knowledgable about Oakleigh council seat dynamics, but why would someone think training with someone a negative thing? Are we supposed to duck and cover in the gym and not train with people due to political leanings? We’d rather have a competent spotter of whatever political leanings, then some non political person who lets us drop 50kg dumbells on our face personally. A spot is a spot!

Vex news article has a graphic billing Martin as “Australia’s Schwarzenegger”. We don’t have the election results but regardless of electoral outcome, we would venture a bet that Martin would easily beat them all in a posedown.
